Mason, would you like a popper?
Just about every night after supper we watch the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. This program has for the better part of a year now been sponsored by Lipitor, the cholesterol lowering drug, so you see their advert quite frequently.

The guy in the ad is Doctor Jarvik. This guy has always creeped me out, but I could never place my finger on why. Tonight we figured it out. While its hard to tell from the pictures provided, when in full motion Doctor Jarvik looked eerily like Mason Verger, the disfigured 'villain' who tore off his own face, played by Gary Oldman in the 2001 film Hannibal.

Dear Pfizer,

Every night during the NBC Nightly News (with Brian Williams) there are commercials for Lipitor. I'm not sure if you know this, but your sponsor, Doctor Jarvik bears an uncanny resemblance to a fictional disfigured child molester named Mason Verger. You can read more about Mason Verger on the following Wikipedia link: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason_Verger ). Thankfully I do not have high cholesterol, so (unfortunately for you) I do not buy or need your product, however I am sure many people who DO need it could be potentially scared off (even subconsciously?) by this striking physical resemblance. I hope you do not think I am being silly, because my spouse and I have discussed this with several of our friends and they have all agreed.

James
Montreal, Canada

Hopefully they take this under serious consideration. I am not kidding around here.

Your inquiry has been received. We are currently investigating your request and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Clearly they are taking this seriously by replying at quarter to three in the morning. They probably paged everyone in the Marketing team for a brutal all-nighter. Yup.

I think bizarre penchant for writing correspondence to corporations would make total sense if you spent your entire life alone with a TV. But you dont, so it doesnt make sense. UR CREEPY.

Hahaa. I haven't seen Hannibal, so I never saw that connection. But Jarvik reminds me of one of the characters from Star Trek... I don't remember where, but an equally creepy guy.

Not that I ever watched that NERD show

Odo's not creepy. He's just odd.

I still have a hard time believing that Gary Oldman is underneath all that. My private theory is that Mason Verger was designed in Jim Henson's workshop.

I wish I had a face disfigurement mask that I could wear around and people would be horrified, then I'd whip it off and say FOOLED YOU, IM YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL JUST LIKE ALL OF YOU. What do you think?

I'd be careful with that. All the beautiful people might then tear off *their* masks and savagely devour you, having revealed that they are, in fact, carnivorous mole-people.

Then again, the only thing I know about beautiful people is that they *really* hate it when you lurk in the bushes outside one of their kickass parties.

Having just watched American and Canadian TV while on holiday, I just don't understand why there are so many adverts on television for different drugs? We don't have these in Britain. Must be because the healthcare is free people don't really care about what the product is called or who makes as long as the doctor prescribes the right stuff. Although if a pharmacist ever hands me a box with pfizer on it, then I'll be sure to never take them for fear of looking like that.
