I haven't seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert.
Heya [info]Jeddite, I'm sure hoping you're still reading the Colorado press (which is part of America!).

Here is an article from the Denver Post called Debunking Canadian health care myths.

Hey, that's fantastic for you, your new spleen, and Rhonda. I'll stick with my health insurance. Thanks though!

I have health insurance too, it pays for my pills, and room upgrades and such.

Boy, I cant wait to suffer a medical emergency, just so I can have all my illusions dispelled about Canadian healthcare. Thanks Rhonda Hackett! Like most people, a single article on the internet changed my entire world view.

Its just offering a different opinion than you may be used to from someone who has experienced both systems first hand. I dont think you'll change your mind, but it certainly isnt the socialist-nightmare you seem sometimes to have set up in your head... people arent getting gangrene from sprained ankles while waiting to see a doctor, people are dying on the floor in ERs.

The system works for all intents and purposes, and theres nothing terrifying about it in any way, shape, or form.

I don't know what I'd do without the NHS. I will admit that I don't know a lot about the way the system in the USA works, but I know that I like the ability to turn up at my doctor's surgery on the day that I need an appointment to discuss anything I want. I then leave the doctor's surgery without having to pay a single penny. If I need medicine then I receive a prescription that I pay £5 to collect from the pharmacy. The Scottish government has set in motion a law to make all prescriptions free by the end of next year. If I need medication on a regular basis I can prepay and save a lot of cash. If I need hospital treatment I turn up at casualty, or my doctor refers me to a specialist. Again I pay zero pounds. Yes there can be waiting lists for specialists, however you receive treatment according to your needs. I like the security of knowing that I can get what I need, and that I don't need to bother about insurance companies debating whether I'm covered, or if it was a pre-existing condition.

USA - population 300,000,000
Canada - population 4 x 12 x 7

Canada is around 34M.. and far more spread out. What's your point? Its easier to have universal health care for less people (and less gross taxes?) Harder?

Gee, hmmm, I wonder if it's easier or harder to effectively and efficiently govern/manage a health care system for 34,000,000 people or 300,000,000 people? Math is hard and somebody once told me that larger bureaucracies are more difficult to control.

But maybe they were lying or on FAUX NOOSE.

As somebody who grew up in the US but with Universal Health care and then lost it when I turned 25 (I was a military brat from the moment I was born). I much prefer the doctors deciding how I should be treated rather than the bottom line.

For all Jed talk about a choice, its really all talk. For most Americans there is no choice on healthcare we either take what our company gives us or we pay out the ass for some other choice. Doesn't really seem like a choice to me.

You know the great thing is, they probably won't have to pay a penny for the treatment that their child is receiving.
The quote mentions a province-wide search for a neonatal bed, to be honest Buffalo NY, is probably a lot closer to Hamilton ON, than a lot of other places in Ontario. It may be a different country, but it made sense to send the child there too.
